Tempest, Fire & Foe Destroyer Escorts
in WWII
and the Men Who Manned Them
Author: Lewis M. Andrews, Jr.
(463 pages, photos)
Reviewer: Tom Harper
Overall Rating:
Four Stars--highly recommended.
An excellent book.
This book is a very well
written history of destroyer escorts and their variants during WWII. There are
hundreds of first person interviews of life aboard destroyers. These stories add
depth and detail that would be lacking if the author only wrote what he knew.
The author has given his story about his career and it shows what a Junior
Officer did and how he assumed command of a ship. The author has left us a
legacy to read about these small and gallant ships. As the generation matures,
these stories in the book will live on forever.
No matter where you opened this
book, there was a story worth reading. Mr. Andrews evidently spent a lot of time
researching material for this book.
For historians, this book is a
gold mine of information. For the destroyer sailor, you can place yourself in
some of the scenes. I highly recommend this book for your library and reading
pleasure.
