Overall Rating: Four Stars: Highly recommended. An excellent book.

Every sailor who ever stood watch on a tin can will fill in their own names and faces, times and places to the stories delivered in volumes one and two of Scurvy Dogs, Green Water and Gunsmoke. Also it will be a welcome addition to the tons of books written by and about seamen in the Pacific during World War II. While never tiring of reading about those exploits I think that our readers will enjoy the many diversions offered up in this book. Problem solving, on liberty, stargazing, replenishing and refueling; on deck, on the bridge or in the belly of the beast (fire rooms and engine rooms) we stand next to the story tellers as they take us back to another time. Crossing generational lines in both sailors and ships the reader is treated to life on a variety of destroyers. Fletcher class to the missile destroyers of today the sea stories are still the same themes. The book is a collection of contributions to a website owned by the Secret Scurvy Dogs Society and all author's royalties are being donated to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society in memory of Lance Corporal Lee Goldman, KIA 15 April 2004.

Overall Rating: Four Stars: Highly recommended. An excellent book.

Scurvy Dogs, Green Water and Gunsmoke is a two-book collection of entertaining sea stories penned by an assortment of destroyer sailors who have "been there and done that" over the past fifty years. Although I enjoyed both volumes, I bonded more with the themes in Volume II. Most of the tales are credible and clever. A few of the offerings require a bit of insider background and perhaps one or two are more fit for mature male audiences.
The uninitiated reader will learn about the US Navy destroyers that roam the world's oceans. These awesome military vessels are renowned for their sleek lines, eye-popping speeds and fascinating heritage. Such a concoction breeds unique ship crews who are notorious as colorful characters with irreverent lifestyles.
Old salts will be reintroduced to the incredible moods of the sea, from impossibly beautiful ocean nights to murderous storms. The joys, hassles and hazards faced by tin can sailors are all there. Some of the stories are funny, some are poignant and others offer genuine insights into life aboard the "greyhounds of the sea."
