CAPTAIN A Sea Story
By
John
G. Denham
(213 pages)
Reviewer: Robert Grimm
Overall Rating:
Four Stars: Highly recommended. An excellent book.
CAPTAIN is a good read for navy and former
navy people only because the humor, use of navy slang, double meanings is superb
but non-navy readers will have no idea of what is being said and some of the
situations described and the humor, while everyday events in navy life, are
definitely for adults only.
That said, CAPTAIN kept
this reviewer with the book in
his lap till completed. It is
relevant that the reviewer did
serve three deployments in the
South China Sea in the second
half of the 1960s, so there was
no problem identifying with the
situations and events. For
instance, the relationship
between Mr. Decker and Denise
was very real and except for her
untimely loss, very typical.
Many of us went through that.
Similarly, the policy of BM 1
Barney Schmidt was right on. It
is also quite relevant that the
command of Commodore Ardwin
Franch immediately prior to his
promotion was in command of USS
HANSON (DD-832) on which I
served those three deployments,
the first, May-November 1965
under him, although as an EMFN
and EM3, my exposure to him was
very limited.
