Seventy-six crewmembers and guests arrived in San Antonio, Texas for the ninth reunion of USS Eugene A. Greene (DD/DDR-711). Capt. Ed Schwier was the Reunion Coordinator and Glenn and Laverne Herman handled the daily functional and administrative details.
Registration for attendees was available on Wednesday. USS Greene memorabilia was on display for all to review. Snack and drinks were also available in the Hospitality Room. On Thursday a “City Tour” of San Antonio, Texas was provided to see San Jose Mission, San Antonio River Walk and Rivercenter Mall. Friday’s tour was to Fredericksburg, Texas to visit National Museum of the Pacific War. A “side trip” to Luckenback, Texas was added at the last minute!
Saturday started early with the ship’s Business Meeting. After a unanimous vote it was decided that the next Greene Association Reunion will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in September 2011. Jack and Linda Plasterer will be our hosts. The afternoon was filled with a tour of El Mercado the largest Mexican marketplace outside of Mexico and Buckhorn Saloon and Museum’s Hall of Horns.
The final Association Banquet provided the grand finale. Captain Earle W. Sapp and his family were honored guests. Captain Sapp was Commanding Officer of USS Greene from 1965 – 1967. Many raffle prizes were provided by crewmembers and lucky winners carried off great prizes.
The Reunion ended on Sunday with good-bys and farewells. Shipmates once again departed for their homes to anticipate reuniting again in 2011.
