Poet's Corner

Cheers

By: Thomas M. McDade
USS Mullinnix (DD-944)
USS Miller (DE/FF-1091)

It was amazing

the sea could be

so angry when

it was the Chaplain

we were hi-lining

to the carrier.

A thousand men

couldn’t have kept

that line taut

and the Chief Boats

was the only man

in the world

not convinced.

We were sopping

wet and trying

to find some

rhythm in

the ship’s

crazy dance

to keep us out

of the drink

so when

the chair dipped

the Chief’s

cusses, threats

and shouts

might just as well

have been cheers.

When we pulled away

from the Randolph

“Colonel Bogie’s March”

was blaring as usual.

We got to line up at sick bay

for a shot of whisky

and who could doubt God

worked in mysterious ways

on DD944?
