Poet's Corner

Shipmates

A poem written for the crew of the USS LAFFEY DD724
By O. Glenn Radder

I know a group of men

Not like many others

They meet every year

And act just like brothers

How they got there

Came only from good

Not from the bad

Part of the "Hood"

It started from the time

They left for the sea

All of the crew

Was their family

And as they wandered

Where ever they could roam

The ship they were on

Was their only home

Over smooth seas and storms

As they sailed the ocean

To protect their ship and crew

Was their only devotion

When you got into trouble

And were in "Harms Way"

You could count on each other

To this very day

So to all of you "Shipmates"

You know what I mean

You have something

Others find only in dreams

Now as you gather

To relive days gone by

For some doggone reason
I have tears in my eyes
