Poet's Corner

This Uncle Sam of Mine

By James E. (Whitey) Stidham
USS Goodrich 1961-63

There stands a giant in our world
Who's known throughout all land
He stands so tall, he's touched the stars
His name is Uncle Sam

His strength is such that he's become
A legend in his own time
But he's a kind and generous giant
This Uncle Sam of mine

Some say he's past his prime of life
And someday soon he'll fall
But the fools who spread these vicious lies
Are those who hate us all

They hate the almighty God we love
The freedom and wealth we protect
They hate our unity, strength and pride
And the leaders we elect

They justify their terrorist crimes
As a war of divine beliefs
But we know our merciful God above
As a God of love and peace

These evil cowards who soiled our ground
And wounded our proud land
Are feeling the wrath and just response
From the hand of Uncle Sam

Their reign of terror, pain and death
Will end with a final peace
As we pursue our determined quest
To bring them to their knees

God bless our courageous women and men
Whose blood is shed for us all
As they offer their lives to bravely defend
And answer America's call

Hold your head high Uncle Sam
Be patient, brave and believe
That God will shed more of his grace on you
As we fight for our right to be free
