We now have full
color profiles for the four
Mitscher (DL-2)-class destroyer
leaders as built 1953-1954. The
pre- FRAM versions were featured
in the January-February-March
2010 TCS Newspaper.
Specifications for this
configuration were taken from
NWIP 11-20, Missions and
Characteristics of U.S. Navy
Ships and Aircraft (applicable
date/revision). The as built
configuration is represented by
the USS John S. McCain (DL-3).

destroyer leader. Displacement:
3,675 tons standard, 4,758 tons
full load. Dimensions: 493'-0"
overall, 50'-0" beam, 26'-0"
max. draft. Machinery: 80,000
SHP, four boilers @ 1,200
psi/950 deg. F, two geared
turbines, two shafts/propellers,
designed speed 36.5 knots,
sustained speed 34.2 knots,
range 5,000 nautical miles at 20
knots. Complement: 28 officers
and 345 enlisted. Armament: two
single 5-inch/54 cal. MK 42 gun
mounts, two twin 3-inch/50 cal.
MK 27/33 gun mounts, two MK 108
(Weapon Alfa) ASW rocket
launchers, four single 21-inch
MK 24 torpedo tubes, four twin
MK 24 20mm gun mounts, and two
depth charge racks (for 600 lb.
Charges). Fire control: one MK
67 GFCS/MK 25 radar (5-in.), one
MK 56 GFCS/MK 35 radar (dual),
one MK 64 GFCS- GUNAR (3-in.),
and MK 102 UFCS/QHB/SQG-1 sonar.
Radar: SG 6 with surface and
zenith search capabilities,
SPS-6 air search, and SPS–8
height-finding. The following
