USS Gearing Class FRAM II DDR (1960s Conversions) Color Profiles

We now have full color profiles for the six Gearing-class radar picket destroyers converted during the FRAM II modernization program of the 1960s. There were two basic configurations during this reconstruction program: the ships as originally rebuilt (Early Configuration) and the ships as upgraded (Later Configuration) with new radar and sonar.

The Early Configuration had three twin 5-in. gun mounts, two triple MK 32 torpedo tube mounts, two MK 10/11 Hedgehog mounts, tripod foremast with SPS-29/37 air search and SPS-10 surface search/navigational radars, SPS-8 height-finding radar on an after deckhouse, Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) on the after stack mast above the ECM antennas, and SQS-23 hull-mounted sonar.

The Later Configuration had three twin 5-in. gun mounts, two triple MK 32 torpedo tube mounts, two MK 10/11 Hedgehog mounts, tripod foremast with SPS-29/37 air search and SPS-10 surface search/navigational radars, SPS-30 height-finding radar on an after deckhouse, Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) on the after stack mast above the ECM antennas, SQS-23 hull-mounted, and SQS-31/32 Variable Depth Sonar (VDS) sonar/SQA-10 hoist.

The following ships are available in the FRAM II DDR Early Configuration and Later Configuration. The profiles above indicate the differences between the two configurations.

USS Kenneth D. Bailey (DDR-713)
USS Frank Knox (DDR-742)
USS Goodrich (DDR-831)
USS Turner (DDR-834)
USS Ernest G. Small (DDR-838)
