Benham (DD-397) Class Color Profiles

Benham-Class destroyers as built.

Specifications for this configuration of the Benham Class were taken from Ships Data U.S. Naval Vessels, Vol. 1, 15 April 1945. Displacement: 1,500 tons (trial). Dimensions: 340’-6” overall, 35’-6” beam, 17’-3” max. draft. Speed: 35.9 knots (trial). Armament: four single 5-in./38 cal. gun mounts, one twin 40mm gun mount, four single 20mm gun mounts, 5-inch/38-cal. AA gun 16 21-inch torpedo tubes in 4 quad mounts, two depth charge tracks (for 600 lb.charges), and four single K-Gun depth charge projectors (for 300 lb. charges). Radar: one SC air search set and one SG surface search set. Fire Control: one MK 33 GFCS/MK 4 (FD) radar and one MK 51 GFCS. Sonar: one QC set. Complement: 16 officers and 235 enlisted.

Basically an improved version of the BAGLEY-class with the SOMERS-class propulsion. To save weight, BENHAMS had 3 boilers instead of 4, all into a large single stack. They exceeded 40 kts during trials.
