Paul "Johnny" Johnson, CWO.
Served on Mayo:15 January 1941- 3 April 1943.
"Johnny" , along with Ray Hutchins, was our senior man, having served in the Navy as a stoker on a the coal burner Rochester in the 20's to a instuctor at Newport, RI in the 1950's. "Johnny" was a man everyone looked up to and admired; as he had the skill and intelligence to teach the younger men the skills they needed. Johnny was a very active member of the Mayo reunion group paticpating in the newsletter, reunions, and all other activities. Serving from ships such as Battleship California and destroyer Mugford DD389, Johnny brought his knowledge aboard Mayo to help create one of the best ships to ever serve the USN. Johhny always said that Mayo was one of his best duties of his naval career that spanned over 20 years. In this picture, "Johnny" is with his wife Irene.

Raymond "Hutch" Hutchins, WTC.

Hutch was a plank owner on Mayo and served for three years before being transferred to new constuction destroyer duty. Hutch was an "old salt" by the time he went aboard Mayo having served in the Asiatic fleet during the 1920's and 30's. A very intelligent and rugged fellow, Hutch was very well respected aboard ship. Ray's brother, Warren Hutchins , also served on Mayo from 41-44 as WT2/c. Ray was very much involved with the Mayo group and we loved having him telling his tales of the sea from over 20 years with the USN. Ray is pictured here with his wife Mary around 1945.
