Patrick O'Neill, TM 3/c. Served on Mayo:Dec 1942- May 1944 Patrick was aboard Mayo during both the Salerno and Anzio actions. Detached to Miami Torpedo Boat Base upon return from Brooklyn Navy yard after action at Anzio, Italy and Mayo's damage.
Leonard "Benny" Bennett, TM 3/c. Served on Mayo:3 August 1944 to 14 December 1945. Benny was promoted Journalist after reaching the Pacific and served out the last days of WW2 in this capacity. Benny was one of the Mayo's great boxers and showed this to the fleet at Ulithi Atoll. Benny is our Newsletter editor and publisher, and a frequent at the reunions.
Harry "Frankie" Frankland, B1/c. Served on Mayo:14 October 1940 to 9 May 1943. Frankie was aboard Mayo during all her early trips in the Neutrality patrol and other convoy duties. He was transferred to the USS Young DD580 after his service with Mayo. Frankie is wearing his Mayo flat hat in this picture. Frankie donated this hat ribbon to the Mayo Archives and history project run by R. Angelini . Frankland is a avid attendee at our reunion events and a participant in the Mayo newsletter.
Joseph Arnold, MM2/c. Served on Mayo:26 January 1942 to 4 April 1944. Joe was aboard Mayo during her battles at Salerno and Anzio. He was transferred off Mayo after reaching Brooklyn, NY with Mayo after the damage received at Anzio. Joe was sent aboard USS Waldron DD699. Arnold participates in the newsletter and reunion activities.
James "Red" Dunn Jr., MM1/c. Served on Mayo:27 December 1940 to 24 January 1944. "Red" was aboard Mayo and saw all actions from convoy duty, bombardments off Salerno, and action at Anzio. Dunn was killed in action in the After Engineroom when Mayo was damaged during the Anzio Invasion, presumably from a mine. He was at his station in the After Engineroom maintaining the "heart" of the ship. The USS Mayo DD422 family hasn't forgotten you Red and the service and friendship that you provided.
