Coghlan at Bethlehem SF was taken in July 15, 1942.
The ship being worked on behind Coghlan is sister, Gillespie.
They were with the Indianapolis in the Bering sea sinking
the Akagane Maru in March 1943.

This is Jap life preserver picked up from the sinking of the Akane Maru on
20,Feb,1943. Indy, Coghlan, and Gillespie caught that ship trying to resupply
Attu.
Shot taken from USS Manila Bay CVE-61, 15 Jan, 1944. At 0934 plane crashed and Coghlan
picked up Lt(jg) Peck, his parachute and a spare gas tank. With cuts over
right eye,he was highlined back over to the Manila Bay . This occured in Hawaii
off Kahoolawe. Coghlan was part of a screen for several CVE's preparing for
operations in the Marshalls at Kwajalein. This is a good shot of the crew making
preparations to transfer the pilot.
This shows Coghlan during a torpedo firing exercise in Hawaii.
date believed to be 3 Sept,1944. According to the log, Coghlan fired a practice torpedo to
port at the USS Fletcher at 0907. Steaming also with Caldwell that morning.
2 July 45. Coghlan taking on fuel from oiler alongside in
preparation for departing 4 july for San Diego and refresher training.
During this refit, Coghlan had requested that the
torpedo mount between the stacks be replaced with 2 more twin 40mm mounts. Also twin 20mm's
replaced the singles and were also added to the fantail. Note the
Sumner/Gearing to port with about 30% more firepower than Coghlan. Even those larger ships had a
time of it dealing with suicide planes toward the end of the war. Coghlan had proved
herself to be a lucky ship many times, especially at Ormoc.
2 July 1945, USS Coghlan at Mare Island undergoing a Anti-Kamikaze refit.
Installation of IFF detection and upgrade of her SC-2 radar system are apparent on her mast.
Added 20 and 40 mm gun stations are also quite prevalent.
