Poet's Corner

GURKE

By: Carroll G. Briggs
USS GURKE (DD-783)

I spent the weekend in San Diego
With a bunch of old geezers
A bunch of old geezers
Who like me were kids
The last time I saw them
Fresh-faced kids every one of us
Running a battle-ready Destroyer
Into harms way
And it stirred inside a sense
A sense I thought long lost
And for those few hours
I was a Destroyer man again
On the bridge of that tin Can
With the wind and sea in my face
The throbbing movement of a live ship
Beneath my feet. . .
Damn it felt good
