Poet's Corner

Loneliest Graves

By: Glen V. Ruff
USS Norris (
DD/DDE-859)

The loneliest graves in the world
are those who are buried at sea
For no one comes to visit
A place they cannot see
And where to place a tribute
On such a restless ocean
No way to mark a spot
On a place of constant motion
The sea is indifferent to the fallen
It cares not for them that mourn
It's neutral in its feelings
With neither pity, love nor scorn
But, does it really matter
The exact location find?
For memories and longings
Are products of the mind
So be content in knowing
That those who rest at sea
Just like the boundless oceans
They are forever free
