Poet's Corner

Ode to the USS LAFFEY DD 724

by Glen Radder

Dedicated to Cy Simonis

Born in Bath Maine
With an already famous name
The crew got her in shape
For her destiny with fate
The "D" Day invasion
Was right down her alley
She blasted the Krauts
So the ground troops could rally

A call came from Cherbourg
That said "How about a hand"
We need a diversion for their "88"s
So we sailed right into their harbor
And opened the gates
After taking a trip
Through the Panama Canal
we headed west to give "Tojo Hell"

After several landings on Phillipine shores
We helped MacArthur complete his chore
At Iwo Jima we blasted as much as we could
To let the Japs know we were there for good

On April Fools Day at Okinawa
We pulled a switcheroo on their shore
By coming in their back door
On pickit duty No. One
We took up our spot
To report the movements of the Rising Sun

On April 16 they threatened our position
They got there early to make a clean sweep
But they found out
The Laffey was'nt asleep
For an hour and a half
They came at us with everything they had
The only thing they did
Was make us damn mad

When the last Jap was gone
We were still looking for more
To make sure those Rising Suns
Would never wave over our shore
With the help of a destroyer
Known as the Laffey 7-2-4
