Poet's Corner

Field Days

By O. Glen Radder

As I heard these words
When I was in the service
I was very upset
And really got nervous

As you all know
When it sounded like fun
You better look
For some place to run

Those same words today
Have a much different meaning
And in no way--are they
Meant to be demeaning

With welders and electricians
And carpenters too
Along with many others
Make up the crew

There is someone else
You cannot overlook
And that is the need
For a talented cook

And as always you know
While doing your chore
Some joker is always teasing
But no one gets sore

At the end of the day
After you have been fed
You stay on your ship
And find your old bed

With a grateful feeling
You climb in with glee
Because now it's like being
Back out to sea

This job is your journey
That came from above
Because--"You guessed it"
It came from your love

If you missed out
Being in on the game
I can only say
It is really a shame

But as time goes by
Do not feel sad
It still is your ship
So always be glad
