Poet's Corner

Hail to the Crew

By Ron Bennett
USS Hailey (DD-556)

For we who sailed the seas afar
And changed our course to follow a star
We think of things the way they were
The times we mopped and chipped on her
We kept her neat, trimmed and tight
With thoughts of home, on a weary night
The times were good for liberty calls
After bouncing around in heavy Squalls
A four year tour seemed long, back then
If I could be young, I would do it again
Our reunions bring that all back to me
For meeting my shipmates, what a delight to me
Seeing our mates from time to time
We all aged at last, like a great fine wine

A Toast to Thee My Brethren
