Holiday
By: Thomas M. McDade
USS Mullinnix (DD-944)
USS Miller (DE/FF-1091)
Shaking his head
he'd give me
that old line:
"Holiday?
It's a damned
vacation."
The eyes of
BMSN Esters
never missed
a spot
my brush
or roller did.
Bulkhead, deck
stanchion or bit
it didn't matter,
every Tin Can
surface had it
in for me.
Even tar
I slopped
barehanded
on snaking
couldn't pass
inspection.
Volunteering
to be hoisted
in a bosun's
chair to paint
the mast was
the only way
I ever
pleased him.
It was a holiday for me
and he'd never ruin his
by resorting to binoculars.
