Poet's Corner

The Birth of a Sailor

By: John Kisicki
USS Shields (DD-596)

Eager, young and just out of school
Where do I go from here?

My Dad was Navy and gave our family a good life.
His Navy pride never left him thru the years.
If I could be just half the man my father is, I would be a happy
man.

I stopped by our local Navy recruiting office just to see what it was all about.
I was advised that I could take a written test,
which could match me to the strongest path to follow,
if I decide to join.

My thoughts were discussed with my Dad.
I knew I was making the right choice, when I saw his Navy
pride light up his eyes.

I took the test and received high marks.
I enlisted in the Navy the following week.
My Dad stood at full attention, looking like a peacock, when I
was sworn in.

Women were no longer a problem. In my life they come and go
like the tide. I will settle down and marry after my career is
secure. Until then I will be just a Navy type of guy.

Two weeks later it was off to college to be all I could be.
