Poet's Corner

USS Charles R. Ware DD 865

By Edward C. Luebke, SHSN 1966-1969
USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865)

In water five thousand fathoms deep.
Sunk as a target, not worthy to keep.
Used and abused for thirty years,
Deaf, now to the people's cheers.
She sailed the world, keeping the peace.
When she went down, not even a press release.
Old and worn, tattered and torn.
Alone she died, and now we mourn.
In her younger days she was Jolly Cholly.
Sleek and fast, that was no folly.
In Vietnam she found her hot war.
And there she became the Charging Charlie R.
She fought with valor she fought with pride.
She gave us sailors one heck of a ride.
A few more cruises and she was done.
Gone forever in eighty-one
We shouldn't mourn, or feel bad about it
In fact, the truth, we should admit.
It' s not a bad fate for an old tincan.
We could wish as much for an old Destroyerman.
