When We Get There
by John J. Krivec
(Written 3/26/2005 60 years after Okinawa)
Will they know us when we get there,
Our shipmates lost at Sea,
When that Kamikaze hit us,
And tried to sink the Kimberly.
We probably will know most of them
Because they haven't changed a bit,
They're still young, all their wounds have healed,
Since that Kamikaze hit.
Will Captain Smith be waiting
At Heaven's pearly gates
To tell us all how proud he is
To be one of our Shipmates.
He was our greatest leader
Through the good times and the bad,
And made our ship the greatest Destroyer
The Pacific Fleet ever had.
Our ranks are getting thinner,
As we grow old and gray,
And when we all have left this earth
To gather in Heaven someday,
We'll have the greatest Ship's Reunion,
Much larger than today.
And since it wouldn't be the same without our wives
To work and run the show
We'll have them there beside us
To show us what they know.
Will they know us when we get there,
O:ur shipmates lost at Sea,
And all of those we've lost since then,
Waiting for us patiently.
I'm sure they'll know us all, you see,
because Shipmates are Shipmates forever,
And that's the code we all lived by
On the USS Kimberly.
She was the greatest fighting ship"That ever went to Sea,
And took us often in harm's way
To help save the whole world's liberty.
I'm not afraid to leave this earth
As I once used to be,
Because I'll be going up to meet my Shipmates,
All those men who served with me,
On that greatest destroyer ever built,
That mighty Kimberly.
She fought in two of our greatest wars
For world peace and liberty,
God bless her and all of us
Who served with us at Sea,
May she rest in peace like us someday,
That mighty DD-521, the USS Kimberly.
