thirty-six Gearing-class radar picket destroyers as outfitted during the
1950s. These include the original twenty-four WW II conversions and the
twelve new conversions of the 1950s. There were two basic configurations for
the 1950s DDR reconstruction programs. The original
early 1950s configuration with three twin 5-in. gun mounts, three twin 3-in.
gun mounts, tripod foremast with SPS-6 and SPS-10 radars, SPS-8 radar on an
after deckhouse, and QHB sonar. The upgraded
mid to late 1950s configuration with three twin 5-in. gun mounts, three twin
3-in. gun mounts, tripod foremast with SPS-6 and SPS-10 radars, SPS-8 radar
on an after deckhouse, the addition of Tactical Air Navigation System (TACAN)
