Gleaves Class Destroyer
Minesweepers
with
Round Bridge
USS Gleaves class destroyers that were converted to high-speed
minesweepers as they appeared between 1944 and 1946. Their armament consists of
three single 5-in. gun mounts, two twin 40-mm gun mounts, and two single 20-mm
gun mounts. Number four 5-in. gun mount on the fantail was removed to
accommodate minesweeping gear and the two quintuple 21-in. torpedo tubes were
removed as weight compensation. Minesweeping gear includes a large cable reel
for sweeping magnetic mines and a smaller one for sweeping moored mines.
