DD-710 Gearing Class
Destroyers
which received the 3-in./50
cal. guns
for the armament conversion program of the early 1950s.
We now have full color prints
for the USS Gearing (DD-710) class destroyers as they appeared after the
3-in./50 cal. armament conversion program of the early 1950s which was carried
out on all but a few of the ships. This program replaced the twin 40-mm gun
mounts with a single 3-in. gun mount and the quadruple 40-mm gun mounts with a
twin 3-in. gun mount. These prints are for the DD version ONLY and
DO NOT cover the ships converted to DDR, DDE, and other special types.
For this release their armament consists of three twin 5-in gun mounts, two
single 3-in. gun mounts, two twin 3-in. gun mounts, and one quintuple 21-in.
torpedo tube mount.
There are
two configurations for the twin 3-in. gun mounts on the after
end of the superstructure deck. The inline version with both
gun mounts on the centerline aft of their MK 56 director and
the offset version with the forward gun mount offset to port,
the after gun mount on the centerline, and their MK 56
director between them. The Gearings available in the inline
arrangement are listed below.
