Strikes on Saipan and Tinian were delayed because of air attacks, but were launched shortly thereafter. The formation continued to be under attack until about 2300, at which time radar screens became clear. Fired 23 rounds of 5"/38 at an enemy plane at 2120 with no observed results. It was learned latter that 9 enemy torpedo planes were shot down by our planes just prior to sunset, which made the resulting attack on our formation considerably lighter than might otherwise have been the case. |

Fired on torpedo plane which crashed on our starboard beam. At 1204 a third plane crashed on port quarter and it is believed to have been shot down by this ship's machine gun battery. At 1240 secured from GQ. Radar and aircraft reports of enemy planes continued to be received but at ranges well in excess of 25 miles. At 1414 went to GQ again, but secured at 1440 as radar screens reported clear of enemy planes. Enemy planes were again reported during early evening hours, but none closed this formation. |

During afternoon search planes reported contact with several groups of Japanese surface vessels consisting of three or more carriers, several battleships and cruisers and many destroyers and oilers. At 1624 launched air strikes on enemy force. Strike planes commenced return to formation at approximately 2030. Many of these planes were forced to make water landings because of fuel shortages. This ship, along with numerous other DD's, was detailed to remain behind to recover pilots and crewmen. Sighted many float lights in water during the course of the evening picked up two full crews of torpedo planes. These men were LTJG HC Thomas, ARM3 RG Clasby and AMM1 GL Stanbill from LEXINGTON; and LTJG F Mayock, AMM1 GT Wall and ARM1 WV Goscicki from YORKTOWN. All men were uninjured. Rejoined TG just before midnight. |

In early morning carriers of TF 38 launched a strike against Okinawa Jima and neighboring islands. At 0955 CAP reported two medium sized Japanese AKs 30 miles from TF. This ship, in company with MOBILE and COTTEN, was designated to leave the TG, intercept and destroy these targets. 1043, sighted one enemy AK in flames and settling by the bow, the other having been sunk by the CAP. At 1103, MOBILE opened fire on the target, and at 1105 this ship commenced firing, straddling the target with the first salvo. The target sank: ceased firing at 1107, having expended 28 rounds of 5"/38. This ship was designated to pick up survivors and a boat was lowered for this purpose. With some persuasion, seven Japanese, all wounded, were taken aboard. One of these prisoners later died and was buried at sea. Upon rejoining the TG, transferred the four most seriously wounded to the LEXINGTON for interrogation and treatment. |

During the evening enemy planes closed the formation, dropping occasional flares and being fired on from time to time by various ships. This formation conducted emergency evasive maneuvers and made smoke to hide high speed wakes. Three enemy planes were shot down near the formation by ship's AA fire. |

Until dawn, continued to be under sporadic enemy air attack. At daybreak, launched strikes on Formosa. Throughout the day, enemy planes, although reported, failed to close the disposition. At nightfall, many Japanese aircraft carried out an attack on the TF. The CANBERRA, in TG 38.2, was torpedoed by an enemy plane, and CruDiv 13 and DesDiv 100 were detached from this TG to protect the CANBERRA's retirement. Enemy air attack moderated considerably shortly thereafter. |

During early morning launched strikes on Luzon. Enemy aircraft were picked up approaching the TF from the west at 0532. Went to GQ. Several enemy planes dove through clouds and dropped bombs near the screen; others were sighted flying low on the horizon. Observed several shot down by the CAP. At 0937, an enemy dive bomber broke through the clouds and scored a bomb hit on the PRINCETON CVL-23 causing a severe fire in the hanger deck, where torpedo planes and dive bombers were being armed for shipping strikes. Several large explosions occurred shortly, as torpedoes and bombs went up. This ship, along with the BIRMINGHAM, RENO, CASSIN YOUNG, MORRISON DD-560 and IRWIN DD-DD-794, was designated to remain with the PRINCETON and assist in fighting fires and rescuing personnel. Both boats were lowered both boats into the water and a search was made for survivors. At 1020 a formation of enemy planes, consisting of two torpedo bombers and escorting fighters was sighted. Opened fire on these and observed gunfire from the RENO directed at the same target. Ceased firing at 1023, having expended 14 rounds of 5"/38 AA. Observed two enemy planes crash in flames, having been shot down by ship's fire or by friendly fighters, who dove on enemy planes. Throughout the morning continued search for survivors. During this period BIRMINGHAM, RENO and MORRISON were alongside PRINCETON fighting fires. MORRISON suffered severe damage to superstructure and mast due to excessive rolling and pitching while lying to leeward of the PRINCETON. At 1230 picked up both boats having rescued all personnel observed in water. Commenced circling formation to provided anti-submarine protection. At 1520, enemy planes were again reported closing formation and one dive bomber was seen passing over the formation. At 1523, a severe magazine explosion occurred on the PRINCETON, blowing a section of her fantail into the air. This section landed on the BIRMINGHAM, who was alongside fighting the fires, causing many severe personnel casualties. This ship maneuvered into position bow to bow with the PRINCETON, passing over a line to secure the two ships together. Lowered both boats with instructions to proceed alongside PRINCETON and take off remaining survivors, who were at this time gathered on the forecastle. Boats from other ships in the group assisted in this work. Personnel were brought aboard this ship as the boats became loaded, and at 1625, Captain RW Buracker, was taken off the PRINCETON and transferred by boat to the RENO. A total of 316 officers and men were brought aboard this ship during the day. Picked up both boats at 1710 and commenced anti-submarine patrol. At this time IRWIN was ordered to sink the PRINCETON by torpedoes and gunfire, plans for salvage having been given up due to danger of additional magazine explosions. Observed one torpedo from the IRWIN hit near the bow of the PRINCETON causing slight damage. IRWIN opened fire with 5" battery at 1735, starting many fires. At 1753, RENO fired a broadside of torpedoes into PRINCETON causing a tremendous explosion and completely destroying the ship. 1755 Commenced rejoining the main body. 2030 Took normal station in formation. 2300 TU 38.3.6 was formed and composed of the BIRMINGHAM, MORRISON, IRWIN and GATLING, with instructions to proceed to Ulithi with PRINCETON survivors and to effect repairs to damaged ships. |

Attempted to resume fueling operations in the morning, but intensity of storm necessitated discontinuance. Many ships reported they were experiencing great difficulty in riding out the storm. Weather stormy, sea very rough. |

Resumed fueling in early morning, this time successfully, the storm having abated considerably. Fueled from the MONOGAHELA. This ship was designated to remain with the tanker group to supplement their escort, a considerable number of their original escorts having been damaged by storm and some being missing. Joined TU 30.8.3 composed of MONOGAHELA, MARIAS, PATUXENT, NEOSHO, THORN DD-647, CROWLEY DE-303 and CAPE ESPERANCE CVE-88. At 2230 this ship was designated to join TU 30.8.7 composed of RUDYARD BAY CVE-81, SWEARER DE-186 and conduct search for personnel of HULL DD-350, SPENCE DD-512 and MONAGHAN DD-354, all unreported since Dec 18th. Weather clear, sea moderate. |

At 0215 RUDYARD BAY reported hearing voices in water. This ship proceeded to investigate and at 0235 sighted a group of survivors. 0305, SWEARER rescued five men from SPENCE. 0635, RUDYARD BAY held flight ops. Throughout the day continued to search for survivors. Ships of this TU picked up men from the HULL and SPENCE. 1456, came alongside an empty 26' motor whaleboat with bow numeral "350." This ship, at 1607, rescued William E Keith S2c from the SPENCE. Keith reported, "he abandoned the SPENCE when she capsized just before noon on Dec 18." 1657, RUDYARD BAY recovered all her aircraft. In the evening left search area to rendezvous with fueling group in morning. These orders were countermanded by Com3rdFlt and plans were laid to continue the search for survivors. Weather clear, sea moderate. |

Continued searching for survivors. Results again negative. In mid-afternoon an enemy search plane was picked up by radar in vicinity of this formation. This plane closed and was visually identified as a "Tony". Opened fire on it at 1602. Ceased fire at 1604, having expended 31 rounds of 5"/38 ammo. The plane withdrew westward and contact was lost at 1608. Set course for Ulithi in late afternoon. |
