The USS Gatling DD-671 is the first United States vessel named in honor of Richard Jordan Gatling, an American inventor.

Gatling was born on the family plantation at Maney's Neck in Hartford County, North Carolina, on September 12, 1818. He died in New York City on February 26, 1903. Gatling is best known for his invention of the rapid fire machine gun that bears his name. He also invented the cotton seed planter, a hemp-breaking machine, a steam plow, and various other farm machinery improvements, which have helped to revolutionize American farming methods.
