Lewis Warrington, born on 3 November 1782 at Williamsburg, Va., attended the College of William and Mary briefly before accepting an appointment as a midshipman in the Navy on 6 January 1800. His first duty, in the frigate Chesapeake, took him to the West Indies where his ship cruised with a squadron during the last year of the Quasi-War with France. His ship appears to have engaged in one action near the end of the cruise. On New Year’s Day 1801, she took the French privateer La Jeune Creole.

Following the cessation of hostilities with France, Midshipman Warrington remained in the Navy. His ship spent most of 1801 in ordinary at Norfolk. The following year, Warrington was transferred to the frigate President for service in the Mediterranean against the Barbary pirates. Over the next five years, he remained with the Mediterranean Squadron, serving successively in President, Vixen, and Enterprise. Promoted to lieutenant in 1805, he returned home in 1807 to assume command of a gunboat at Norfolk, Va. In 1809, Lt. Warrington voyaged to Europe in Siren as a dispatch courier. He next served a tour of duty in Essex.

When the war with England began in June of 1812, Warrington was in Congress serving as the frigate’s first lieutenant while she patrolled the North Atlantic. During his tour of duty in that warship, she made two successful war cruises, capturing nine prizes off the east coast of the United States during the first and four off the Atlantic seaboard of South America during the second.

Promoted to master commandant in July 1813, he took command of the sloop-of-war Peacock later in the year. On 12 March 1814, he put to sea with his new command bound for the naval station at St. Mary’s, Ga. After delivering supplies to that installation, he encountered the British brig Epervier off Cape Canaveral, Fla. Peacock emerged victorious from a brisk 45-minute exchange with that opponent, inflicting 10 times her own losses on the enemy. For his role in the victory, Warrington received the thanks of Congress in the form of a gold medal, and of the state of Virginia in the form of a gold-hilted sword.

Warrington took his prize into Savannah, Ga., and then embarked upon his second cruise on 4 June. On that voyage, which took him to the Grand Banks, the Irish coast, the Shetland Islands, and the Faroe Islands, he took 14 prizes.

After returning via the West Indies to New York, Warrington took Peacock on her third and final war cruise. His sloop-of-war stood out of New York with Hornet and Tom Bowline on 23 January 1815, sailed around the Cape of Good Hope, and entered the Indian Ocean. Unaware that peace had been concluded in December 1814 at Ghent, Belgium, Warrington led his little force on another successful foray against British commerce. After taking three prizes in the Indian Ocean, he entered the East Indies in search of more game. On 30 June, he encountered the East India Company cruiser Nautilus in the Sunda Strait and attacked her. After a sharp action which cost the British ship 15 men including her first lieutenant, she surrendered to Warrington and his force. At this point, Warrington learned of the peace, and he therefore released the prize and started for home. Peacock arrived back in New York on 30 October 1815.

In 1816, he commanded Macedonian briefly for a voyage to Cartagena, Spain, to convey there Christopher Hughes, the representative of the United States at negotiations over the release of some Americans imprisoned by Spanish authorities. In 1819 and 1820, Capt. Warrington commanded Java, followed by Guerriere in 1820 and 1821. Each ship was assigned to the Mediterranean Squadron during his tenure as her commanding officer. Capt. Warrington returned home and received orders to duty at the Norfolk Navy Yard. In February 1825, he relieved Porter as commander of the West Indian Squadron during the latter stages of the piracy suppression campaign and thereafter bore the title, commodore.

In 1826, Warrington returned home and served ashore for the remainder of his career. After four years in Washington (1826 to 1830) as one of three commissioners on the Navy Board, a body charged with the administration of naval materiel, Warrington returned to Norfolk for a decade as commandant of the navy yard. In 1840, he was reassigned to Washington for another two years as commissioner on the Navy Board. After the 1842 reorganization of the Navy Department, Warrington became Chief of the Bureau of Yards and Docks.

On 28 February 1844, he took over temporarily the duties of the Secretary of the Navy after Secretary Thomas W. Gilmer died as a result of wounds received when the large cannon “Peacemaker” exploded during a firing demonstration on board Princeton at Washington. Near the end of March, Warrington relinquished those duties to the new secretary, John W. Mason, and resumed his former assignment. In 1846, he became Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance, which office he held until his death on 12 October 1851.

USS WARRINGTON DD-383 Ship History

The second Warrington (DD-383) was laid down on 10 October 1935 at Kearny, N.J., by the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co.; launched on 15 May 1937; sponsored by Miss Katherine Taft Chubb; and commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on 9 February 1938, Comdr. Leighton Wood in command.

Following a shakedown cruise to the West Indies during April and May, the destroyer returned to New York on 24 May, underwent post-shakedown availability, and then conducted tactical training off Cape Cod and the Virginia capes. She also participated in maneuvers with the boats of Submarine Division 4 in waters near New London. In October, she headed south for refresher training in Cuban waters.

On 4 December, the warship headed north to Newport, R.I., where she became a unit of Destroyer Division (DesDiv) 17, Destroyer Squadron (DesRon) 9. Warrington operated along the east coast and made a cruise to the Caribbean in a task group built around Enterprise (CV-6) and Yorktown (CV-5) to participate in Fleet Problem XX.

In mid-February 1939, she reported to Key West to serve as an escort for Houston (CA-30), the cruiser in which President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral William D. Leahy embarked to observe the concluding phase of the 1939 annual Fleet exercise. The destroyer concluded that assignment upon her arrival at Charleston, S.C., on 3 March where Roosevelt and Leahy left Houston to return to Washington. After three months of operations along the coast between New York and Norfolk, the destroyer moored at Fort Hancock, N.J., on the morning of 9 June to embark King George VI and Queen Mary of Great Britain for passage to Manhattan.

Warrington departed Norfolk on the 26th, transited the Panama Canal on 3 July and arrived in her new home port, San Diego, soon thereafter. Assigned to the Battle Force, United States Fleet, the destroyer conducted operations along the California coast for the next nine months. At the beginning of April 1940, she departed San Diego with the ships of Battle Force to participate in Fleet Problem XXI, conducted in Hawaiian waters. Though nominally retaining San Diego as her home port, Warrington was based at Pearl Harbor for most of her remaining peacetime service. Between April 1940 and April 1941, she returned to the west coast only twice, once in June 1940 for repairs after the conclusion of the Fleet exercise and again in late November and early December of that year.

After 12 months of training out of Pearl Harbor, frequently with submarines engaged in torpedo practice, Warrington departed Hawaii on 18 April 1941 to augment the forces engaged in the so-called “Neutrality Patrol.” After passing back through the Panama Canal on 7 May, she continued on to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. There, she became part of a patrol force composed of Cincinnati (CL-6), Memphis (CL-13), and Davis (DD-395). Her area of operations encompassed the eastern Caribbean and the western Atlantic from the West Indies south to about 12 degrees south latitude. In addition to patrolling, she later began intermittent escort duties; and, in fact, her last assignment during the “Neutrality Patrol” period consisted of a voyage in company with Milwaukee (CL-5) to escort SS Acadia from Recife, Brazil, to Puerto Rico. She arrived at San Juan on 3 November; then headed north for a two-day visit at Norfolk; and entered the Charleston Navy Yard on the 9th for repairs.

Still moored at Charleston on 7 December when word arrived that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor had catapulted the United States into World War II, Warrington put to sea the following day to conduct war patrols along the Atlantic coast from Norfolk to Newport. Late in December, she rendezvoused with HMS Duke of York and escorted the British battleship into Norfolk on the 21st. For another three weeks, the destroyer patrolled the eastern seaboard as far north as the Massachusetts coast and then headed south on her way to a new area of operations. On 17 January 1942, the warship arrived in Balboa at the Pacific terminus of the Panama Canal where she reported for duty with the Southeast Pacific Force.

Based at Balboa, she operated with the other ships of the Southeast Pacific Force (three cruisers and another destroyer) for the next 16 months. She had two primary missions to perform: escorting merchant, supply, and troop ships between Panama and the Society Islands and patrolling for submarines in the southeastern Pacific as far south as Callao, Peru. Secondary assignments included duty as target and training ship for submarines preparing to enter the war zone and for Army patrol bombers getting ready to do the same. After the Guadalcanal landings on 7 August, her runs to the Society Islands took on new meaning because the bulk of the ships she escorted after that date carried supplies and reinforcements to support America’s first offensive in the Pacific.

On 10 and 11 December, she had the honor of escorting South Dakota (BB-57), heavily damaged in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in mid-November, into Balboa on her way to repairs at New York. She continued her patrol and escort duties with the Southeast Pacific Force until early June 1943. On 23 May, she stood out of Balboa on her last mission with that organization, to escort a convoy to the Society Islands. Upon arrival at Bora Bora on 4 June, she received orders to report for duty to the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet.

At that juncture, the southwestern Pacific became Warrington’s area of operations. Upon reaching Noumea, New Caledonia, she began a five-week stretch of convoy duty that took her to such diverse places as Australia, Samoa, Hawaii, Guadalcanal, and the New Hebrides Islands. On 1 October, she departed Espiritu Santo in the last-named island group to escort Prince William (CVE-31) to Samoa, whence the destroyer headed to Pearl Harbor for repairs and to pick up a convoy.

Warrington returned to Espiritu Santo on 30 October but, by 6 November, had arrived off Koli Point, Guadalcanal, where she joined up with the second echelon of the Bougainville invasion force. At daybreak two days later, she escorted the troop ships charged to her protection into Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville. She patrolled to seaward while the transports landed reinforcements and supplies on the beaches to the east and southeast of Cape Torokina.

Near noon, the air raid warning sounded. Both troop and cargo ships got underway to evade the action; and Warrington joined the antiaircraft defenses for the anchorage and beachhead. At four minutes after noon, the destroyer opened fire on two Japanese planes crossing her stern. The first began smoking almost immediately and crashed dead astern. The second came under fire from the other ships as well; shuddered under the impact of the combined fire of the ships and then, trailing pieces from his fuselage, splashed down, too. Warrington claimed sole credit for downing the first plane and a part in getting the second. The enemy withdrew at about 1225; and, six minutes later, the transports resumed their tasks at Cape Torokina. That night, she escorted the empty transports back to Guadalcanal.

For the next month, Warrington made escort runs between Guadalcanal and Espiritu Santo. On 14 March, she became a part of the antisubmarine screen for an escort carrier task group operating in support of Task Force (TF) 37 which, in turn, was striking at Kavieng, a large Japanese base located on the northwestern tip of New Ireland. Later that month, she escorted the third convoy of troopships to Emirau Island, arriving there on the 28th. On 6 April, the destroyer returned to the New Hebrides, stopping briefly at Espiritu Santo before continuing on to Efate where she discharged passengers. On 9 April, she reentered the port at Espiritu Santo for an 11-day availability.

On the 20th, she rejoined TF 37 at Efate and, four days later, headed south to Sydney, Australia, where she arrived on the 29th. After a week in the Australian port, Warrington headed back to Efate with TF 37, entering Havannah Harbor on 10 May.

There, she and Balch (DD-363) were detached from the task force and ordered to New Guinea. The two destroyers reached Milne Bay on 13 May and reported for duty with the 7th Fleet. Two days later, Warrington stood out of Milne Bay bound for Capes Sudest and Cretin. At the latter place, she joined the antisubmarine screen of a Hollandia-bound convoy of LST’s. She escorted her charges into Humboldt Bay on 22 May and remained there for three days. She and Balch got underway together again on the 25th to conduct a shore bombardment mission at Wakde Island in support of the advancing troops of the 6th Army.

She began her first mission early on the 26th. Dense foliage precluded the identification of specific targets, so Warrington contented herself with an area bombardment, firing more or less uniformly throughout the designated sector. On the 27th, she and Balch returned for a repeat performance, at the conclusion of which they received a message from the general commanding ashore lauding their “. . . superb cooperation . . .” and indicating that their gunfire had been “. . . of great assistance . . .” to the troops ashore. That same day, the two destroyers headed back to Humboldt Bay.

The return to Hollandia, however, proved brief. Warrington entered the bay on the 28th but departed again late that afternoon to escort an echelon of LST’s to a convoy rendezvous point. Upon her arrival, she joined the convoy’s antisubmarine screen and set course to escort it to Biak Island. The convoy reached Biak at 0725 on 30 May, and Warrington received orders instructing her to report to shore fire control group no. 1 to deliver call-fire in support of American ground forces advancing toward Mokmer airstrip. About an hour later, she received instructions from the commanding general ashore to patrol west of the beachhead to keep the Japanese from moving reinforcements in from that direction. After a singularly uneventful morning and afternoon, the destroyer quit her patrols and assumed responsibility as fighter director ship when Swanson (DD-443) left the unit that night.

The following day, she retired from Biak with TG 77.8 and arrived back at Humboldt Bay the same day. Between 3 and 5 June, she made another voyage to Biak during which she provided gunfire support briefly on the 5th before departing to escort the empty LST’s back to Humboldt Bay.

Following a voyage that took her to Manus in the Admiralties and back to Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides, Warrington departed the latter port on 19 June in company with Balch to return to the United States. Steaming via Bora Bora, the two destroyers transited the Panama Canal on 8 July, stopped briefly at Colon, and arrived in New York on the 15th. She immediately entered the New York Navy Yard and began repairs.

She completed her yard period at New York early in August, conducted maneuvers at Casco Bay, Maine, and then entered the Norfolk Navy Yard for additional alterations. On 10 September, she departed Norfolk in company with Hyades (AF-28) and set her course for Trinidad.

Two days out of Norfolk, along the Florida coast, the two ships encountered heavy weather. In the afternoon, Warrington received word that she was steaming directly into a hurricane. Later that evening, the storm forced the destroyer to heave to while Hyades continued on her way alone. Keeping wind and sea on her port bow, Warrington rode relatively well through most of the night. Wind and seas, however, continued to build during the early morning hours of the 13th. Warrington began to lose headway and, as a result, started to ship water through the vents to her engineering spaces.

The water rushing into her vents caused a loss of electrical power which set off a chain reaction. Her main engines lost power, and her steering engine and mechanism went out. She wallowed there in the trough of the swells-continuing to ship water. She regained headway briefly and turned upwind, while her radiomen desperately, but fruitlessly, tried to raise Hyades. Finally, she resorted to a plain-language distress call to any ship or shore station. By noon on the 13th, it was apparent that Warrington’s crewmen could not win the struggle to save their ship, and the order went out to prepare to abandon ship. By 1250, her crew had left Warrington; and she went down almost immediately. A prolonged search by Hyades, Frost (DE-144), Huse (DE-145), Inch (DE-146), Snowden (DE-246), Swasey (DE-248), Woodson (DE-359), Johnnie Hutchins (DE-360), ATR-9, and ATR-62 rescued only 5 officers and 68 men of the destroyer’s 20 officers and 301 men. Warrington’s name was struck from the Navy list on 23 September 1944.

Lewis Warrington commanded fighting ships during and after the War of 1812. The second WARRINGTON, DD-383 was launched on 15 May 1937 and was commissioned on 9 February 1938. In December, she reported to Newport, Rhode Island, and began operations along the East Coast and in the Caribbean. On 9 June 1939, she carried England’s King George VI and Queen Mary from New Jersey to Manhattan. Later that summer, she steamed west to San Diego with the SOMERS (DD-381) and GRIDLEY (DD-380) and from there, conducted fleet operations along the West Coast.

Between April 1940 and April 1941, she operated mostly in Hawaiian waters, and then returned to the Atlantic to become a part of the Neutrality Patrol in the eastern Caribbean and western Atlantic with the CINCINNATI (CL-6), MEMPHIS (CL-13), MILWAUKEE (CL-5), and DAVIS (DD-395). She was in the Charleston Navy Yard on 7 December and the following day put to sea for war patrols along the eastern seaboard. She then reported for convoy escort duty and antisubmarine patrol with the CONCORD (CL-10), TRENTON (CL-11), and SAMPSON (DD-394) operating between Balboa, Panama, and the Society Islands.

In December 1942, she escorted the SOUTH DAKOTA (BB-57), heavily damaged in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, into Balboa on her way to New York for repairs. Patrol and escort duties continued until 4 June 1943 when the WARRINGTON was ordered to the southwestern Pacific for convoy duty.

By 6 November, she was off Koli Point, Guadalcanal, where she joined the Bougainville invasion force. At daybreak two days later, she escorted troop ships into Empress Augusta Bay. Near noon, the WARRINGTON’s gunners joined the antiaircraft defense of the anchorages and beachhead. At 1204, they opened fire on two Japanese planes and splashed the first dead astern. Gunners on the WARRINGTON shared in bringing down the second raider.

Escort duty between Guadalcanal and Espiritu Santo, antisubmarine screening during strikes at Kavieng, New Ireland, and escorting troop ships to Emirau Island took her into April 1944. On 10 May, she and the BALCH (DD-363) were ordered to New Guinea for duty with the 7th Fleet. Subsequently, she joined the antisubmarine screen for a Hollandia-bound convoy of LSTs. She and the BALCH were underway together again on 25 May for shore bombardment in support of the 6th Army on Wakde Island. The WARRINGTON’s and BALCH’s gunners provided uniform coverage that effectively pierced the island’s dense jungle and earned them praise from the army’s commander ashore.

Returning to Humboldt Bay on 27 May, the WARRINGTON was immediately off again to escort LSTs headed to Biak Island. She arrived on 30 May and reported to deliver call-fire in support of American forces advancing toward Mokmer airstrip. Later, she patrolled west of the beachhead to prevent the Japanese from moving in reinforcements and then, replaced the SWANSON (DD-443) as fighter director ship that night. She continued to operate between Biak and Humboldt Bay until 5 June. Finally, on 19 June, she and the BALCH headed for home, arriving in New York on 15 July.

Following repairs and alterations in New York and Norfolk, she headed south for Trinidad in company with the HYADES (AF-28). On 12 August, two days out of Norfolk, along the Florida coast, the two ships ran into heavy weather. By the afternoon, they were heading directly into a hurricane. At 1430, the destroyer’s skipper passed the word for the crew to make ready for rough weather. Later that afternoon, the ship was rolling between twenty and thirty degrees. By about 1700, the storm had caused dents in the WARRINGTON’s port bulkheads and her captain decided to heave to. He signaled the HYADES to that effect. The latter asked if she should stand by, to which he replied “Negative, will overtake you after the storm.” At that point, the ship’s barometer had not dropped significantly, which led her skipper to assume they would miss the storm. The HYADES continued on her way alone.

Steaming at about four knots, the WARRINGTON rode relatively well until about 2300 when the engineering officer reported that the engine room blowers were out and water was pouring through defective vents to her engineering spaces, which soon after caused a temporary loss of electrical power. Without power or steering, the ship lost headway and floundered in the rough seas. At some point, the port and starboard bulwark plating was torn off. She regained power and headway briefly and turned stern to the wind, while her radiomen desperately, but fruitlessly, tried to raise HYADES. Finally, her communications officer resorted to plain-language distress calls to any ship or shore station. Shortly thereafter, a wall of water flooded the engineering spaces except for the after engine room and this time, the ship lost power, steering, and radio permanently.

The captain ordered all hands above decks and torpedoes, topside ready ammunition, and anything else movable to be jettisoned at about 0400. At about 0800, he ordered the guy wires securing the foremast to be cut, and, in the 70-mile winds, it broke almost immediately, but didn’t go into the sea for another hour, during which time two men were swept over the side. Only one was recovered. The other clung to a line off the bow beyond help until he was overcome by exhaustion and let go. The starboard 20-mm and 40-mm guns were tossed overboard at about 1000 and other gear followed. By noon, however, it was apparent that the WARRINGTON’s crew were losing the struggle to save their ship. At 1250, her crew abandoned the ship.

At that point, she was listing about thirty or forty degrees to starboard. During the next fifteen minutes, she continued over taking many of her crew with her and throwing others into the sea as she disappeared amid exploding depth charges. Survivors, clinging to life rafts and floater nets fought rough seas into the early morning hours of Thursday, 14 September. Several died of salt water poisoning and exposure and were buried at sea. Adrift on the sea, the men watched helplessly as planes and ships passed without seeing them. Searchers were still looking for a ship, but by 0450 Friday morning, they had begun picking up survivors. The HYADES, CROATAN (CVE-25), FROST (DE-144), HUSE (DE-145), INCH (DE-146), SNOWDEN (DE-246), SWASEY (DE-248), WOODSON (DE-359), JOHNNIE HUTCHINS (DE-360), ATR-9, and ATR-62 scoured the seas and by 1900 had found only five of the ship’s twenty officers and sixty-eight of her 301 men. Three of those rescued died aboard the CROATAN. Forty-five bodies were recovered and buried at sea.
