Highlights
The reunion kicked off with a reception at my home in Granger, IN, on Wednesday evening. On Thursday, we toured the campus of Notre Dame University, had lunchat Tippecanoe Place (studebaker family home), and visited the St. Joseph County Military Honor Park and Museum. Friday took us to the St. Joseph County Vietnam Veterans Memorial, St. Paul’s Memorial United Methodist Church, the Studebaker National Museum where we had catered lunch and topped off the tour at the South Bend Chocolate factory.
Friday night dinner was a football themed dinner at which there was a surprise meeting between the Strauss shipmates and some members of Sub Unit One of the 1st ANGLICO Marine Corps group. During the period of 31 March – 5 April 1972 USS Joseph Strauss DDG-16 and her sister ship USS Buchanan DDG-14 were instrumental in saving the lives of this Marine Detachment in I Corps near the DMZ as the NVAA invaded the south in full force.
Saturday’s banquet saw colors and a Memorial service by Miller’s Vets. this is a group of homeless veterans who was founded by Robert L. Miller, Sr., a wounded WWI Navy Veteran and retired Superior Court Judge. LCDR Miller addressed the attendees and spoke about how Miller’s Vets and the Robert L. Miller, Sr. Veterans Center came about.
